As beautiful as the tan may look on the beautiful fair skinned Australians, it is skin damage. When exposed to the UV rays of the sun, our skin reacts instantly to protect the other internal organs and turns a dark color, in this process the skin ages faster and also has the risk of developing skin cancer. But not to worry, tanning creams and lotions is here to the rescue.

Before we go into the world of fake tanning, let’s understand a little about tanning and its effect. Most people mistakenly think that tanning helps protect the skin against sunburn. However the truth is tanning offers only minimal protection and the UV rays cause irreparable damage to the DNA. On repeated exposure even with no apparent sunbu
tanning has other health risks like skin cancer, aging, dry and flaky skin.

It has been a part of Australian culture since 1950s to desire for a tanned skin. Australians are in fact exposed to a high level of UV radiation in the world. And as the fashion for a beautiful tanned skin came in vogue, skin cancer has spread like an epidemic in Australia. Today Australia is believed to be amongst the countries that have the highest rate of skin cancer. Each year over 1800 Australians die due to skin cancer. Does this mea
Australians should forget getting their skin tanned? Of course not, the alte
ative is to try much safer options like tanning creams and lotions Australia.

Over 3 decades now there campaigns have been help to increase awareness about skin cancer and this has resulted in fewer people getting sun-baked. Other alte
atives were used to replace direct sun-baking like tan accelerators, solarium and fake tanning lotions and creams. These products have potential health risks and hence should be used cautiously.

Ideally, to get a tan you should avoid using anything that has UV radiation as there is nothing called as a safe tan when these harmful things are used. A good example of this is the solarium that Australians so prefer using. Solarium also called tanning beds, sun beds and sunlamps are believed to provide “safe” tans. But nothing could be far from the truth. Research has proved that the UV radiations emitted by the solarium actually increases the risk of developing cancer by nearly 75 percent especially in people who use it before they are 35 years old. The International Agency for Research on Cancer actually lists tanning beds at the top of its list of high cancer risk category. They have labelled it “carcinogenic to humans”.
