Always Pay Yourself First
Written by Terry L. Weber
There is an old saying:"a word to the wise is sufficient." I know you are either wise or are gaining wisdom swiftly because of your daily prayers asking God to give you His wisdom and show you your truest interest. "The wise shall inherit glory, all honor and good." (Prov. 3:35 and Isa. 32:6).
Therefore, your prosperity is secure. Why? Because Jesus said so. "Roll your works...and succeed." (Prov. 16:3) How? By your constant leaning on, trusting and being confident in the Lord. (Prov. 3:5). Also remember this: "The Lord will not allow the uncompromisingly righteous (those in good standing with God) to famish" (Prov.10: 3).
But, according to sound Christian financial planning, you absolutely must, without exception do this: Pay Yourself First!
Think about it. Who worked for that paycheck? You did. Who has first rights to the way it is spent? You do. This is important so don't let a month pass by without investing in yourself. Pay yourself before you pay anyone else, even if it's only $5 or $10. Put something aside for savings on a regular basis. If your expenses exceed your income, cut out whatever costs you must and carefully make room for some monthly savings. Never spend more than you make.
Suggestion: You could give up a meal or two. Don't buy a CD. Use the phone or write a letter instead of buying gas to run the car. Remember this: If you wait to save until all the bills are paid you are doomed to never have anything leftover for yourself! You will never have your money working for you.
In short, your prosperity is at hand, meaning: in your hands, your prosperity is your responsibility. The Lord has already given you riches. The urgent question is: are you going to make a concerted effort to be a good steward, caretaker and manager of those riches from this day forward?
Think of the benefits your riches will allow: now you can freely, out of your own surplus money, joyfully and generously, help those Lord tells you to help with your wealth!
So, start with your very next paycheck in your hand, pray for the Lord's help and wisdom, then - pay yourself first!
