Are You Emotionally Ready to Sign a Record Deal?

If you are like most artists, then you would like to sign a record deal. This is a great dream, but you need to know when you are ready for it. If you are about to sign a deal you aren’t ready for, you are going to end up hurting yourself, your agent, the record company and everyone else you work with.
Before you sign, you need to think about what you want and whether signing a record deal means making sacrifices you aren’t ready for. Most artists are primarily interested in sharing their passion through their music. However, when you sign a record deal, you need to prioritize your financial goals. You will be expected to put out more music to increase sales for the record company. If you aren’t ready to do that, then you aren’t ready.
You should also think about the different things that you are going to have to give up. You may no longer have any ownership rights of your work. You may also have to relinquish some of your freedom in your personal life, as you will be representing your label and the record company everywhere you go. There will probably be a number of deadlines that you are going to have to cope with, which may be difficult to meet.
Be clear as clear as possible about the terms of the contract. This is the only time when you have the power to negotiate, so make sure that you use it to your full advantage. Once the contract has been signed there is no turning back.
You also need to look at your expectations and decide if they are realistic. You may remember the days when artists regularly signed contracts and received a few million dollars right off the bat. This doesn’t really happen anymore. You are going to have to accept that the music industry has changed significantly and that you are going to have to accept that you are going to have to accept that you need to diversify a little. You will probably need to do live performances and sell your work online.
When you walk into a record company to sign the contract, you need to think this through. Every artist wants to take a deal, but only a few of them are really ready to do it. Don’t ruin your career by taking the leap too early. You need time to figure it out. If you are pressured to sign a deal immediately, then you need to request time to think it over. This is not an unreasonable thing to request.
Remind yourself and the other stakeholders that if you make the wrong decision out of haste, everyone is going to suffer. Just don’t take too long to figure things out. Record companies work in one of the fastest paced industries and they aren’t going to sit around and wait for you to make up your mind.
