Arm Liposuction - How It Is Done
Written by Mia Alexander
Aging and weight gain can cause fat accumulation in the arms and make them unsightly. Unfortunately, the arms are one of those areas from which it is difficult to get rid of the fat even with a rigid diet and exercise regimen. That's why many men and women consider going under the knife to get rid of the excess fat. Arm liposuction is a quite popular procedure today and this article tells you how it is done.
Arm Liposuction Surgery – The Procedure
Your plastic surgeon prepares you for the surgery by placing marks on the area from which fat is to be removed. The marks would help him know where to make incisions to take out the fat. An antimicrobial agent is then applied on the treatment area to minimize possibilities of infection. The next step is anesthesia. Different kinds of anesthesia may be used for this procedure – local, light or general with or without a gentle sedative. With the introduction of laser liposuction treatment systems such as the Smartlipo Triplex™, the use of local anesthesia has become quite common.
After anesthesia has been administered and takes effect, the cosmetic surgery begins. The surgeon makes an incision or two in the skin using the markings he made earlier as the guideline. A small cannula is inserted through these incisions to rupture the fat and vacuum it out. The time required to perform this procedure would vary with the degree of fat that has to be taken out and technique used. The procedure usually doesn't go beyond three hours.
You may have to do an additional procedure called an arm tuck to tighten any loose skin that remains.
After the surgery, you may experience some swelling and bruising, but this diminishes after a while. Downtime after the procedure would vary with the technique used. If you have opted for the minimally-invasive Smartlipo™ technique, you can get back to work in two days.
Choosing the Plastic Surgeon
It is important to find the right plastic surgeon to perform your upper arm liposuction. The most important thing is that the specialist should put your well-being on the top of his list of priorities. You should also be comfortable with him and with the place where the surgery is going to be performed. A good plastic surgeon would first evaluate if you are a good candidate for the surgery, and if so, be open with you about the procedure and the possible risks and side effects of the surgery. He should have experience in performing this particular procedure successfully and also with the technique you are considering. It's important to ensure that the plastic surgery center he works is AAAASF-accreditation. Don't give too much importance to cost. You should be willing to pay for a procedure well done. Moreover, you can always get financial assistance from a cosmetic surgery financing company.
