Article 1-Steel Buildings For Snow Loading
Written by Colin Bichir
Building in colder areas has its fair share of challenges, just as building in many other areas does, and steel buildings are considered to be preferable over other less durable materials that are more susceptible to damage in harsh weather conditions.
Snowfall can cause all sorts of havoc on structures such as houses and sheds. Often during periods of heavy snowfall, which can occur during blizzards, substantial amounts of snow can fall and put massive pressure on buildings.
New Zealand is one such country that has certain regions where snow loading is applied, depending on where you live and how heavy the snow falls are in the area. Being extremely strong, steel buildings are better equipped to deal with and support heavy snow loads.
A snow load refers to the intensity exerted on a building due to the weight upon it, resulting from snowfall. Rooftops are subjected to the greatest amount of weight and therefore need to have extra strength applied in the building process.
You may be considering building a new structure such as a shed and are conce
ed if you need snow loading. A building professional can inform you of the snow load design requirements in your local area, or you may be able to calculate it yourself. You’ll need to know how high you are above sea level. Take that and combine it with information found in the Building Consent Authority (BCA) to determine the snow load design requirements in your area.
A steep pitched roof in areas of high snowfall makes sense, as the snow can hopefully slide off. Whereas lower pitched or flatter styled rooftops will accumulate deep levels of snow.
However, rooftops are not the only part of the steel shed that is at risk. Build-up of snow on rooftops can put immense pressure on guttering as it slides off. In many instances it causes the gutter to fall off under the weight of the snow that has built up. Steel snow straps are generally applied to gutters in these instances for extra support and to eliminate the guttering to collapse under the stress.
Especially designed paint specifically for steel buildings is available to apply to all steel in harsh conditions and high moisture areas. The paint will decrease the chances of rusting and is well worth applying to your steel work to ensure the longevity of your building.
A steel building is your best option when it comes to constructing your home or shed. This way you know that your dwelling will have the strength required to deal with any snow load you may encounter.
