INTRODUCTION

As long as you go on dates wearing masks – not presenting your “real you”, you might stay single. When you become aware of the masks you wear, understand why you wear them and have the courage to remove them you can develop a truly intimate relationship.

IF YOU TRICK YOUR DATES ALL YEAR ROUND YOU SABOTAGE ANY ABILITY TO DEVELOP A SUCCESSFUL RELATIONSHIP

Halloween is a fun annual holiday observed on October 31. One day per year people wear costumes and trick or treat others.

But is this what you do on the dating-scene all year-round:

* Wear masks and costumes to trick others (and yourself too!)?
* Try to “make believe” you are different than what you really are?
* Treat your dates – be it on-line or face-to-face – to the “best” of you, hiding those parts you don’t want anyone to know about?

Not being authentic while meeting someone new may “help” during first dates, but even if you succeed to extend the date to a relationship, it will eventually sabotage it.

WHEN AND WHY HAVE YOU BEGUN WEARING MASKS?

As children, we all unconsciously donned masks:

* We adopted patterns of behavior and expression for which we received love, esteem and positive reinforcement from our parents.
* We repressed, denied and distanced ourselves from modes of behavior that encountered rejection and judgment.

Without being aware of it, we continue to wear these masks as adults.

AS LONG AS YOU ARE NOT AWARE OF YOUR MASKS, YOU HARM YOUR RELATIONSHIPS

As long as you don’t take the time to acknowledge that you walk around wearing masks – rather than presenting to the world your genuine, true self, you are likely to harm your relationships.

When you become aware of yourself and the masks you wear, you can choose to remove them, take the chance of being exposed and vulnerable with your partners, give expression to your authentic self and develop a healthy and satisfying relationship.

The early development of avoidant attachment creates a coping mechanism that forms in childhood. Disconnected parent-child interactions typically trigger this condition. People who develop this attachment style learn to depend on their resources. They avoid deep emotional connections. People with this attachment style want intimacy, yet they remain afraid of becoming dependent on others. Understanding Avoidant Attachment Among the four primary attachment styles, avoidant atta

The idea of making yourself more desirable by making yourself less available doesn't make a lot of sense when you think about it. After all, Juliet would have plunged a premature dagger into the heart of her romance with Romeo if she hid in her room rather than go out on her balcony. The end of Sleepless in Seattle shifts from "awww" to "aw, no" if one of the two main characters skips the trip to the Empire State Building. As these examples from fiction show, making yourself
