p>Ovarian cyst: It is fluid filled pocket in an ovary or on its surface. Common in women who still get their periods. Most of the times they are painless and harmless. The majority disappear without treatment. However, the ruptured ones can cause serious problems.

Causes: Imbalance of hormones like estrogen and progesterone. Functional cysts are more common (ovaries normally grow cyst like structure every month called follicle). These follicles are responsible for the production of hormones. If normal monthly follicles keep growing it’s called functional cyst.

Functional cyst is further classified into two types:

Corpus luteum cyst:  Estrogen and progesterone production begins for conception when a follicle releases its egg. The egg releasing follicle is now called the corpus luteum. Corpus luteum grows into a cyst when there is an accumulation of fluid.

Follicular cyst: In the mid of your menstrual cycle, an egg travels down the fallopian tube when it bursts out of its follicle. When the follicle doesn't rupture or release its egg but continues to grow the cyst begins to form.

Signs and Symptoms: Most of the times no symptoms are present but in case of ruptured or enlarged ovarian cyst symptoms like pressure, bloating, swelling or pain in the lower abdomen on the side of the cyst may be present. The pain felt may be sharp or dull the duration of onset of pain may also vary. Pain during intercourse may also present.

To avoid such problems we have natural and best ways in Ayurveda which are discussed below in detail:

  • Massage: Pain during periods may get worst due to THE presence of cysts. Massaging the lower back, thighs, buttocks, and stomach can help in the reduction of pain.
  • Exercise and stretching: Exercise and stretching the abdominal muscles can help in the reduction of pain. It helps by reducing the tension of muscles. Running and gentle stretching of muscles is recommended to women with ovarian cysts. It also helps in the prevention of further development of cysts.
  • Heat: When heat is applied pain reduces and there is an increase in blood flow. Hot water bottle wrapped in a towel should be applied to the stomach or lower back for about 20 minutes. It can be repeated several times a day as it is a safe method. We should keep in mind that the pad is not hot enough to burn skin.
  • Weight loss: If a woman is overweight, losing weight may help her body to regulate hormones, prevent the development of more cysts, and improve symptoms of pain and fatigue.
  • Dietary habits: Green vegetables are very effective at helping the body process and eliminate excess estrogen.

A diet high in fiber has been discovered to decrease the reabsorption of estrogen in the body, lowering the incidence of estrogen-related health issues including cysts. Fruits and vegetables are the best sources of fiber for this purpose. Add fiber-rich flax seeds to your salads, soups, and smoothies.
