Written by Vaidya Jagjit Singh
p>Ovarian cyst: It is fluid filled pocket in an ovary or on its surface. Common in women who still get their periods. Most of the times they are painless and harmless. The majority disappear without treatment. However, the ruptured ones can cause serious problems.
Causes: Imbalance of hormones like estrogen and progesterone. Functional cysts are more common (ovaries normally grow cyst like structure every month called follicle). These follicles are responsible for the production of hormones. If normal monthly follicles keep growing it’s called functional cyst.
Functional cyst is further classified into two types:
Corpusluteumcyst: Estrogen and progesterone production begins for conception when a follicle releases its egg. The egg releasing follicle is now called the corpus luteum. Corpus luteum grows into a cyst when there is an accumulation of fluid.
Follicular cyst: In the mid of your menstrual cycle, an egg travels down the fallopian tube when it bursts out of its follicle. When the follicle doesn't rupture or release its egg but continues to grow the cyst begins to form.
Signs and Symptoms: Most of the times no symptoms are present but in case of ruptured or enlarged ovarian cyst symptoms like pressure, bloating, swelling or pain in the lower abdomen on the side of the cyst may be present. The pain felt may be sharp or dull the duration of onset of pain may also vary. Pain during intercourse may also present.
