Bankruptcy is status of a business or an individual wherein debts cannot be paid. A business or individual can file for the bankruptcy just so it can protect the institute or self from creditors (their harassment) and in many cases have part of his debts discharged. It also gives struggling borrowers a chance to reduce their losses and reorganize their finances. There are examples where even creditors force companies/individuals to file for the bankruptcy to save themselves from losses in which case it is called involuntary bankruptcy.

The law could give you "allowances" of the property that you could retain or keep. But once the amount is exceeded, the additional property could be kept with some "reaffirmation" agreements. Furthermore, a bankruptcy does appear on the credit report and it would appear for a long time period; 7 years and you should be having a clear idea on your credit report. All this should be explained by an experienced bankruptcy attorney.
