Base Realignment and Closure Importance and its Impact on Logistics

A US federal government procedure dealing with the rearrangement or shutting down of all military installations that are considered to be redundant and perceived as not providing any beneficial contribution is called BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure). Military resistance to the removal or rearrangement of old institutions is common and BRAC needs to triumph over such challenges to be able to effectively get rid of redundancies. Intense resistance to the elimination of longstanding setups is expected as they involve a huge yearly investment.

In 2005, Pentagon released a list of military organizations that were approved for BRAC procedure and initiated the process. It was in this commission that the decision to initiate the subsequent round of BRAC process in 2015 and the process to be repeated every eight years was made.

Monetary saving by increasing efficiency and lowering overheads is the primary objective of base realignment and closure procedure. In order to increase efficiency, government will have to pay a price in the form of construction or rehabilitation of institutions and replacement or repositioning of the workers.

But, the initiative has generated employment for housekeeping and other similar service providers, and contractors, who have been awarded contracts for the relocation of equipment and workers, and IT management.

Resistance to the base realignment and closures procedure is understandable as it requires a lot of effort for the development of an effective plan and its successful implementation, and has the capability of leading to unemployment, but studies suggest that such extreme effects are often unlikely. Economic entities at military setups generally purchase necessity at the base rather than at the location where they have been stationed meaning that such units are comparatively isolated than other companies and so their influence on the local communality is likely to be limited. Nonetheless, the effect on rural community is likely to be more intense and the process of recovery gradual.

Local federal service and spend being harmed by the base realignment and closure initiative is not unlikely. This of course depends on the magnitude to which the military base is integrated into the local community?s fiscal planning.
