As you may know, water damage can occur in just about any spot of your home, especially in the basement. In our last article, we mentioned that water damage also has the ability to in home maintenance systems based in the basement. Such systems include, but are not limited to: water pipes, sewage pipes, electrical wires, garbage disposal, and HVAC systems. It might be surprising that these types of systems do have the ability to generate moisture and cause problems, fortunately it can be prevented.
The Heating and Air Conditioning System
If your heating and air conditioning system is located within your basement, it is important that you take the time to regularly inspect it thoroughly. When performing the inspection, be sure to examine the drain pans and to remove dust and debris for a free flow. Filters should never be overlooked and should also be replaced whenever needed. In addition, be sure to include a careful inspection of the ductwork since deteriorating insulation should be treated and sealed.
Ventilation Systems
During the inspection of basement ventilation systems, it is important to include a meticulous inspection of all systems. These systems include: the water heater, exhaust fans, dryer vents, etc. If any type of failure or damage is suspected within these systems, be sure to have it repaired right away in order to prevent further damage. Choosing to not make a repair right away can lead to a more costly need for repair.
