As you may know, water damage can occur in just about any spot of your home, especially in the basement. In our last article, we mentioned that water damage also has the ability to in home maintenance systems based in the basement. Such systems include, but are not limited to: water pipes, sewage pipes, electrical wires, garbage disposal, and HVAC systems. It might be surprising that these types of systems do have the ability to generate moisture and cause problems, fortunately it can be prevented. Today we will be talking about Sump Pumps.

Sump Pumps

One of the most popular lines of defense against water damage in the basement for homeowners is a sump pump. A sump pump basically helps to keep unwanted water out of your home.

When you take the time to inspect your pump, it is important that you make sure that the outer pipe is never frozen or clogged and that it is working properly to direct water away from your home.

When testing the sump pump, fill the pit with water to ensure that the pump is working correctly. This where you should make sure that your pump is running and actually pumping water out.

The air hole and discharge line should be regularly cleaned and make sure that the motor is running well and not displaying any strange noises.

If you are operating a battery operated pump, inspect the batter and replace it whenever needed. Any and all problems should be fixed immediately
