I see a lot of “Dog lovers’ on social media, who buy expensive breeds from foreign countries, which are not even suitable for Indian conditions. Owning a dog breeds best suited for the Indian climate is a great choice to give proper care and environment to the dog for their growth and health.

The Indian Dogs have evolved entirely through natural selection, without deliberate human intervention. The result is a very hardy dog, highly alert, intelligent, and capable of independent thinking; a human commensal, yet perfectly adapted for survival in a free-ranging life.

Best dog breeds in Indian climate. Instead of adopting a dog to live in your house, I would suggest you start feeding, sheltering, and looking after the “stray” dogs in your locality. Dogs function best in packs and when left to their own devices. They hate being cooped up inside. So, start by becoming a dog lover in your locality.

You could consider breeds from Kerala like Chippipparai, Kombai, and Rajapalayam.

Kombai

Another hound from South India, the Kombai (Combai) was bred to hunt boar, bison, and deer since as early as the 9th Century. In comparison with the Rajapalayam, the Kombai has a tan coat with usually a black muzzle. The jaws are wider and much stronger as well. In recent times, this breed is highly endangered and can be found in scarcity in a few regions and a couple of specialized kennels.

Rajapalayam

Rajapalayam Indian dog breeds

This breed is an Indian guard dog developed in the Rajapalayam region in Tamil Nadu. It was believed that they were used to fight against British Cavalry in a few battles. The most prized look is the milky-white coat with a pink nose, although the whiter mutations come with a higher chance of deafness as with all other white coat dog breeds. Lately, they are being used by the Indian army as guards along the Kashmir border.
