Bicycle Accidents Overlooked All Too Often
Written by Robert May, Personal Injury Attorney
Some cities are less friendly to bicycle riders than others – often there are no lanes or shoulders to ride,
and the cyclists are left with no choice but to either ride in the street (dangerous) or on the sidewalksrn(usually illegal). It’s easy to see why many bicyclists feel they have no rights on the road. They are
slower, smaller and less protected than the motor vehicles whizzing by.
For the most part, cyclists are required to follow the same laws as motor vehicles – and in some
situations, are given similar rights as pedestrians. With large cars and truck rushing by at 30 to 50 miles
per hour, it can be frightening to share the same lane. However, your only other option as a cyclist is tornride on the sidewalk and risk endangering pedestrians or getting a ticket.
It’s true that there are rules and laws for drivers to follow in regard to keeping cyclists safe. The yellow
diamond-shaped signs let drivers know there is bicycle traffic in the area. In addition, it is common tornsee signs asking drivers to “share the road.” These signs provide little comfort to bicyclists out there asrnthey are often ignored. It is a sad fact that drivers bully cyclists by running them onto the sidewalk orrneven off the road. Too often, bicycle accidents are overlooked as personal injury cases.
Although traffic accident statistics are bleak, the worst part is that they are incomplete. The majority
of bicycle-related accidents go unreported to police authorities unless they involve death or severe
injuries. Most of the time there is not enough information because there are no other drivers orrnwitnesses. Most drivers involved in hit-and-run bicycle accidents are forgotten or never caught. After
such a disorienting event, it is extremely difficult for bicyclists to pay attention to things like license plate
numbers or the car color, make and model.
The first rule of protection on the road is being aware and obeying the rules and laws. In addition,
protective gear such as a helmet, pads and lights are invaluable to protecting you from harm. It is very
important to make yourself visible both day and night. Attach lights on the handlebars and seat post, asrnwell as reflectors in spokes. Reflective clothing is also a great way of protecting yourself when riding.
Some of the best protection you can give yourself is preparation. Before braving the busy streets, lea
to stay in control of your bicycle. If you are in control and aware of your surroundings, you can quickly
move yourself and get out of harm’s way. This could be the difference in simply taking a quick breather
after a close call, and a serious injury.
Although there are many hit-and-run drivers involved in bicycle-related accidents, when at-fault drivers
stop, they are usually let go because there is not enough evidence. They are also often let go because
it is assumed that the bicyclist was to blame. It is key in any type of personal injury case to get proper
representation. However, it is especially crucial with bicycle injuries because often the blame is already
cast. Knowing your rights is very important – there are laws in favor of bicyclists.
If you or someone you care about has been involved in a bicycle accident involving a motor vehicle, dornnot let it go unnoticed. Even minor injuries should not be overlooked. Contact Harris May Injury Lawyers immediately for your free case consultation.
