Breast Augmentation: Saline or Silicone?
Featuring Stephen Greenberg
Breast augmentation is the third most popular cosmetic procedure performed in the United States with over 400,000 performed in 2006 alone. This number is expected to increase dramaticallly, as 34% of women surveyed would like to improve the size and/or shape of their breasts. Breast augmentation is not just for celebrities. It can be rejuvenating, improve self-esteem and confidence, perhaps more significantly than any other enhancement, as evidenced by its swelling popularity.
In an exciting new development, silicone breast implants were recently approved by the FDA for cosmetic use, giving women even more opportunity for enhancement. But how do you know which implant is right for you? There are a couple of distinctions to consider about your choice of implants before scheduling your consultation for breast enhancement this swimsuit season.
Modern breast enhancement began in 1963 with silicone implants. Over the past forty-four years, more than 800 different styles of implants have been created, allowing greater personalization for each individual. However, these new choices can be confusing. Once you determine breast enhancement is for you, you must then choose the “look” you desire. I recommend gathering pictures of breasts you find attractive or desirable to bring to your consultation. These can be found on-line or in magazines. Look for bodies that are similar to yours. Try to find models that match your height and weight and bra size so that your surgeon will have a better idea of what will be required to fulfill your dreams. A few tips are offered below to enhance your exciting transformation.
At your consultation, the diameter of the breast is measured and the breast tissue is evaluated to ensure the best results. The base diameter of the implant is selected to match the natural breast diameter. The volume of the implant is determined by balancing the patient’s cosmetic desires for their improved physique and the implant options. Implants can be used to augment, or may also be used to correct differences in breast sizes (asymmetry.) Every patient is treated for her individual needs and requests. The patient is asked to select from three different styles of implants; low, moderate, or high profile in a smooth round texture. Patient’s love to try them on and compare and it is great fun to see their enthusiasm well up as they begin visualizing their new form. We look to achieve body harmony with the waistline, hip, shoulders and buttocks. We help the patient determine which size looks proportional in relation to the rest of the body. Smaller implants tend to look natural. Larger implants tend to give more cleavage. If the implant is relatively small compared to the starting breast size, a saline implant will often give a more natural looking result. If the implant is larger than the breast tissue, a rounder fuller breast will be created. If this is preferred, a silicone implant will soften the feel and look and avoid rippling. Many patients favor the more pliable feel of silicone.
When deciding between silicone and saline, we caution that silicone implants may require a slightly larger incision for placement. Also, an MRI is recommended every three years to check for implant integrity. With saline implants, the incision size can be smaller (only 25 mm, or about an inch) and MRI’s are not needed because the implant will simply deflate if there is a leak, releasing only sterile salt-water. If you are still undecided, your doctor will suggest what he or she feels is the best implant choice to achieve your goals. Together, you will both decide which is right for you.
The best thing is that thousands of women are choosing to enhance their appearance and improve their self-confidence with breast augmentation. As a result, the implants and the procedures continue to improve. And this has allowed many more women to realize they can truly look as good as they feel. It is an exciting time for women considering plastic surgery.
