If you or one of your close relatives has been diagnosed with breast cancer, you may have concerns about whether breast cancer runs in the family (sometimes called hereditary breast cancer). Cancer occurred when changes, called mutations, take place in genes that regulate cell growth. The mutations let the cells divide and multiply in an uncontrolled way, which causes this threatening disease. But you don't have to worry because many clinics provide breast cancer treatment in Pune and various cities all across India.

How does breast cancer start?

Breast cancer springs when cells in the breast start to divide and grow abnormally.
All cells in our body contain genes that guide the functionality of different organs in the body. Sometimes, changes happen in a gene which forces the cells to start to work abnormally. In any one individual, if there is a flaw or abnormality in a gene, that equivalent mix-up of defective genes will show up in all the cells that contain similar patterns.

This dysfunctional gene is known as an altered gene.
Altered genes can be either inherited or acquired.
● Inherited altered genes are passed down from generations.
● Acquired altered genes develop due to a combination of things such as age factor, environment and lifestyle factors.

Even though breast cancer is common among women, only a small percentage of cases occur due to altered genes.

What causes breast cancer?

Numerous things can affect your chances of getting breast cancer. There’s no single cause. It results from a combination of the way we live our lives, our genes and our environment. However, some noticeable causes might include factors such as ageing, menstruation before the age of 12, menopause, atypical hyperplasia or lobular neoplasia, alcohol, obesity, smoking, pregnancy and breastfeeding, and family history to mention a few.

Inheritance genes

Genes are short portions of DNA (deoxyribonucleic corrosive) found in chromosomes. DNA contains the guidelines for building proteins. These proteins are responsible for controlling the structure and capacity of the considerable number of cells that make up your body. People who have inherited an altered gene are usually at a high risk of developing breast cancer and possibly other cancers. Studies show that nearly 5% of women with breast cancer are affected due to an altered gene.

BRCA1 and BRCA2 hereditary changes

Most acquired cases of breast cancer are related to transformations in two qualities: BRCA1 (Breast Cancer gene one) and BRCA2 (Breast Cancer gene two). Everybody has BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.

The BRCA gene is responsible for fixing cell damage and keeping breast, ovarian, and different cells developing ordinarily.

However, when these genes contain transformations that are passed from age to age and generations, the genes don't work regularly, and bosom, ovarian, and other malignant growth chances increase. BRCA1 and BRCA2 changes may represent up to 10% of all malignant breast growths, or 1 out of each 10 cases.

If anyone of your family member has developed a genetic mutation related to breast cancer, it does not necessarily mean that all of your family members will acquire this disease. However, it is important to keep a check on your breasts to notice any small changes. You can also conduct self-breast examinations at regular intervals.

Along with healthy lifestyle choices like maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol and exercising regularly, there are other risk-deduction options for women with a high risk of abnormal genetics. These include hormonal therapy medications and frequent screening. Always remember to consult your cancer specialists regularly to avoid any delay in your treatment process. Remember, prevention is better than cure.
