Lots of people talk about the importance of learning how to build confidence, but they just talk in circles without ever getting to the “how to’s”. Personally, I find that extremely frustrating! I recently read a great book called the Right Questions, by the late Debbie Ford. She challenged my way of thinking about many things during the course of the book. But probably the most profound statement for me was,

“If we didn’t have the ability to fulfill an authentic desire, we wouldn’t have the desire in the first place.”

Take that one in. Re-read it to really let it soak in. This statement filled me with a sense of hope and purpose. I frequently find myself doing battle with that negative voice telling me my dreams are unrealistic and I need to just sit down and be quiet. C’mon – you know the one!

But this quote allowed me to tell that voice IT needed to just sit down and be quiet!! It allowed me to build confidence within myself that perhaps my dreams ARE doable. The things I aspire to are not silly and ridiculous!! What power there is, in believing in the possibility!

Let’s break it down a bit…

Where do “authentic desires” come from? These are desires that are genuine, reliable, and trustworthy. Their motives are pure – not selfish. These are the desires God places within us! They aren’t just there randomly.

Does knowing that build confidence that those desires are possible? It should!

Take a minute and remember what Philippians 1:6 has to say, “ I am sure that the One who began a good work in you will carry it on until it is completed.”

“Completed” can mean a lot of different things. It may not look like how we envision it to look, but that verse should help us build confidence in the fact that we are not alone as we step outside our immediate comfort zones and try to achieve those dreams that have been placed in us. So what are you waiting for? It’s time to go after that authentic desire!
