Can Positive Intelligence Work With Telemarketers?
Written by Oliver Scott
Telemarketers can be viewed as the business world’s version of the frontline cavalry. Always dealing with prospects, getting appointments, suffering from rejections, meeting deadlines and quota, all these can bring down even the toughest among them. And once telemarketers go down, the performance level of telemarketing firms also suffer as well. Depression, poor performance and anger issues are just some of the problems that these people face. And these can severely impact a company’s campaign.
Naturally, telemarketing services are interested in finding ways to boost morale, as well as productivity, for their employees. While there are many solutions being offered, like group vacations, higher salary, free food, and other company perks, perhaps what attracts the most attention is the most basic of them all: happiness. That is one factor so powerful, but is mostly misunderstood by many managers.
Yes, some of you will say that happiness is the product of all the earlier mentioned perks. It may be true, but that is only skin deep. Happiness is about loving your work and willing to do more for its sake. This is more of a mindset, not a reward. It must be built in the employee, so that he can see the positive side of bad events. Not only will this help form a protective layer, it can also help telemarketers find solutions better for their campaign problems. Being optimistic is the measure of man, whether he can still smile after a long hard day.
Now, developing an optimistic habit is not an overnight event. This takes time to develop, but once it is there, it is there to stay. Shawn Achor of Harvard Business Review suggested a few things that will encourage positive intelligence. Some of the steps and simple tips that you can follow are:
- Jot down three things they were grateful for.
- Write a positive message to someone in their social support network.
- Meditate at their desk for two minutes.
- Exercise for 10 minutes.
- Take two minutes to describe in a journal the most meaningful experience of the past 24 hours.
They may sound very silly for employees, but once you put them into practice, you will realize that these actually work. Happiness is possible for you.
But why is there so much focus in keeping employees happy? Based on a study conducted by Gallup Healthway last 2008, in was revealed that “happy employees mean better bottom-line results. Employees who score low in “life satisfaction,” a rigorously tested and widely accepted metric, stay home an average of 1.25 more days a month… That translates into a decrease in productivity of 15 days a year.“
So there it is. Happiness can be a great way to increase productivity. Really, it would not hurt for telemarketing services to find ways to get their employees to laugh once in a while. If this can be translated to better workplace performance, then so be it. Goals can be easily reached this way.
Why not give this a try and see for yourself?
