Special education teaching is more challenging than regular classroom teaching. Special educators face different kind of problems as they need to adjust to specific needs of the children. Special children require teachers with unique teaching ability as they have limited reasoning and conceptual capability. For effective teaching, these educators must be emotionally and mentally prepared to support these children in all spheres not just academically. They should be passionate and must have genuine regard and affection for students.

Qualification

Requisite qualification is Bachelors degree in teaching. You need to specialize in Bachelors and Masters Program in Special Education. There are organizations which offer short term programs which are of 2 weeks to 1 month duration. However, it is always advisable to join courses of at least 1 year duration.

Training in the field

Special educators require intensive training after they have acquired bachelor’s degree. They should seek exposure from specific teaching programs to understand the environment where they will have to work. Through training and practical exposure they will be more clear and firm about choosing it as a career. Besides classroom teaching and children handling, they should be skilled in curriculum planning, writing and implementing. Since, it is demanding job, they also should have excellent organizational and time management skills.

Besides good amount of passion and patience, a good teacher must have caring approach towards children. Dealing emotionally challenged children can be a task. So, one should have the ability to provide positive reinforcement to special kids. Along with this, good communication skills are essential for the teacher to be able to communicate with counselors and parents. As sometimes parents of special children need to be assured of certain programs, techniques and methods of educating the child. Therefore, teacher must develop confidence and faith in his/her teaching method and must always remain positive to ensure child’s well –being.

Avenues to explore

Special educators can demonstrate their work skills at following places-

Special schools: The best utilization of people skilled in special education is to work at school, where they will be appointed as teachers imparting education to children with special needs.

Rehabilitation centers: Another avenue where their skills could be helpful is at Rehabilitation centre. They can join any public and private centre and provide their assistance.

Private practice: They can provide private support by working full-time or part-time with special children. They can even provide private coaching to needy students. They can divulge into independent practice after acquiring required qualification and experience.
