Career Opportunities and Job of Bartenders

Preparing drinks for the patrons in various restaurants, bars as well as in cocktail lounges, the bartenders serve them with grace and dignity. Since alcoholic drinks could be of multiple types and each type could have several mixes as well, the job of bartenders is cut out at knowing these combinations and serving the standard mixes efficiently and quickly.

What the Bartenders Offer

Usually bartenders will offer drinks at the public enjoyment places. It could be –
Drinks of their own preferences; orr
Those made according to choice of the customer.

In the process they will also check whether the customer has really attended the minimum age making them eligible to drink alcohol.

Basic Tasks

Basic tasks accomplished by the bartenders include the followings –
Taking the orders for drinks from visitors or customers;
Serving the drinks as per the orders;
Collecting money for the drinks served;
Fill drink orders that are placed by the diners in the restaurants;
Additional duties include arrangement of bottles and bar wares, washing the glasses, and even cleaning the bar;
Removal of empty bottles and replacement of empty glasses and mugs in the bars and restaurants; and
In larger bars or restaurants they are often helped out by the bartender assistants.

Strengthening the Bar

One of the basic tasks of the bartender is to effectively strengthen the bar. Keeping the track of inventories of the liquors available in the storeroom of the bar, they help replenishment of the stocks exhausted. Some of them even do the actual order supplies. However, in larger enterprises like global standard bars and restaurants these tasks may be carried out by the beverage manager or the wine stewards.

Bartenders work in –
Cocktail lounges;
Hotels and restaurants;
Private clubs;
Dining space in corporate organizations;
Exclusive liquor bars; andr
More than 20% of the bartenders have their own bars.

Qualifications and Training

It is one of the careers where most of the trade is learnt while on the job. However, there are vocational institutions that offer training and education in bartender courses. Good first hand experience can be gained by working as a waiter and watching the work of seasoned bartenders.

One basic necessity for bartenders is to know about the federal, state, and local laws regarding drinking alcohol and that is why in some states it is necessary for the bartender to have a license. Above all; he or she should be neat, clean and sociable.
