"Blepharoplasty is usually done for cosmetic reasons but also improves vision in older people; the eyes look rejuvenated after 1-3 months following surgery!"
● The eyelid may be swollen and bruised for 1-3 weeks post-blepharoplasty surgery.
● People usually resume their normal work schedules or feel okay going in public after 10-14 days.
● Contact lenses should be avoided until at least two weeks post-surgery, but eyeglasses can be worn.
● It is important to rest properly for 3-4 days after blepharoplasty surgery, which helps in post-op recovery.
Blepharoplasty is the plastic surgery procedure for correcting the eye profile that may be performed on the upper or lower eyelids. Defects, deformities, and disfiguration of the eyelids are surgically corrected to produce a more youthful and rested appearance. The blepharoplasty surgery in Dubai has doubled since last year as getting blepharoplasty is like reversing the signs of aging visibly. In general, the procedure is also called eyelid bag removal and helps treat eyelid droopiness at any age.
At Burjeel Day Surgery Center, Dr. Parag Telang (MS, MCh, DNB, FCPS), a top specialist in eyelid surgery in Abu Dhabi, noted that if a patient is thinking of scheduling eyelid surgery/ Blepharoplasty, it is mandatory to set realistic expectations or achievable goals beforehand that must be communicated during in-person consultation. Moreover, the patient must know that they will need to take little time off from their usual daily activities to recover smoothly.
Why is taking care of post-op recovery so important after Blepharoplasty?
Even though complications are rare with a specialist plastic surgeon, it is important to attend post-op follow-ups as advised. Since the procedure is an important part of facial rejuvenation and a commonly performed facial cosmetic procedure, it requires significant post-op care to achieve smooth healing with improved recovery time. These instructions are given to the patients during the introductory consultation to avoid unwanted issues or discomforts. Blepharoplasty removes excess skin and orbital fat to correct eyelid drooping and improve sight in older people with concerns about saggy upper eyelids. Thus, blepharoplasty surgery not only improves the eyelid's appearance but also has functional benefits, which sets eyelid surgery as the most common procedure among aged people. Therefore, taking care of surgical sites post-surgery is important for faster healing and results.
Top 7 Post-op Instructions to Recover Faster after Blepharoplasty:
Following the blepharoplasty surgery, it is common to experience a little bit of pain, swelling, bruising, numbness, and sensitivity to light that requires resting and following proper healing instructions.
Dr. Parag Telang instructs his patients to follow the tips below to heal smoothly and recover faster.
Note: Only alter the suggested instructions after clearing it with a plastic surgeon.
1. Take time off for a few days.
Prospective patients must have clear thoughts about what to follow and how to take care after surgery. However, asking questions during the consultation process may help the patient to heal effectively with the prepared set of planning and schedule. It is advisable to take time off for a few days to heal smoothly, and it will be helpful if the patient has someone to help them cover their primary responsibilities at home. Thus, keeping the schedule clear and giving time to heal hassle-free is the best way to heal.
2. Do's after surgery
Do's after blepharoplasty helps improve healing as follows:
● Apply an ice pack on the eyes for ten minutes every hour the night post-surgery to help improve puffiness.
● Use prescribed medications.
● Sleep with an elevated head for a few days to help recover faster post-surgery.
● Wearing sunglasses is advisable while stepping out to protect the eyelid skin from harmful ultraviolet radiation and dust.

3. Don'ts after surgery:
Do not be involved in the following activities during recovery to support faster healing:
● Do not lift heavy weights, swim, jog, aerobics, sports, or other strenuous physical exercises for the first few weeks after blepharoplasty surgery.
● Do not smoke for at least 4 weeks before and after surgery. Smoking can hinder the healing process.
● Do not give extra force to the eyes during the recovery period, so rubbing the eyes should be avoided.
● Do not wear contact lenses for about two to four weeks after blepharoplasty.
● Do not take Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen sodium, or any herbal supplements, as these medications can increase bleeding and impair healing.

4. Set realistic expectations
Getting aware of the post-surgery process is a way to heal without fretting, so setting realistic expectations will help to meet the desired results. Expecting anything unrealistic about eyelid surgery does not make sense because every patient is unique and has a difference in their physiological and anatomical status. Some bruising, redness, puffiness, or pain are common after blepharoplasty that improves over time with every passing day, following the procedure. Thus, be patient; the results will be shown once a patient completes the recovery timeline.
5. Protect the surgical sites
It is crucial to protect the eyes from harsh sun rays, wind, and pollution after blepharoplasty surgery during the initial stage of recovery. However, wearing sunglasses and a long-brim hat is necessary while stepping out. Applying sunscreen is also indispensable if you must go in the sun.
6. Prevent coughing, sneezing, and vomiting
After eyelid/ blepharoplasty surgery, it is crucial to prevent surgical sites from unwanted pressure that can cause high blood pressure in the treated areas. However, coughing, sneezing, and vomiting should be prevented, and thus, a regular medical check-up is required to avoid unfavorable medical conditions. Also, it is important that a patient does not bend downwards and lift anything heavier for about six to eight weeks post-surgery.
7. Sleep soundly
Take a good night's sleep each night to accelerate the healing process. Discontinuation of sleeping patterns or late-night sleep can cause complicated healing; thus, in case a patient feels tired, taking a nap can help. Having a proper time for relaxation means an easy and smooth recovery.
