Catching that first wave!

All my life I've visited the sea, swum in the sea, dived in the sea but it was only recently I finally tried surfing. It's always been something I was interested in doing, I just never got round to it. Finally over the course of a weekend in Cornwall I got my wish. You begin by spending a good twenty minutes practising paddling and jumping to your feet not in the sea though, on the sand! At the time this seems pointless; you just want to get in the water, but once you try it for real, knowing exactly where to stand, the practise makes all the difference. As you would expect it’s not as easy as it looks, there is a method and as for turning that’s a whole other matter but being able to stand up and go straight can be learned in about an hour. You will have to cope though with the many aborted attempts that will send you crashing through the waves like a ragdoll! Finally though as others flounder around you, the length of each ride steadily begins to increase until suddenly you hit the right wave, with the right balance, and you find yourself flying towards shore. It really is everything you imagine; an amazing rush; the feeling is exhilarating and you instantly realise why millions of people all over the world surf religiously for most of their lives. During the weekend we did several activities but nothing was as brilliant as surfing, I strongly recommend it to anyone who fancies trying something different you won’t regret it!
