Cavity-fighting Lollipops? Itâs true!
Written by http://www.loloz.com.
For any number of reasons, and you might be following all of the rules, you could be suffering tooth decay. We like to call them the “dental fundamentals”: brushing at least twice a day, flossing once a day, following your dentist’s recommendations, and visiting your dentist twice a year. You could be doing all of these and still getting cavities. Did you know that there’s another step that could take your oral health to the next level?
Dr. Wenyuan Shi of the UCLA School of Dentistry’s Section of Oral Biology is both a prominent research dentist and an advocate for international dental health. He seeks to bring oral health tools to people who haven’t got them: children, the elderly, people who never learned personal dental care, and citizens of all ages in countries that don’t prioritize oral health. Dr. Shi thought the key might lie in a traditional herbal remedy from his native China. After thousands of trials of over 1000 different herbs he discovered that licorice root kills Streptococcus Mutans, the bacteria that causes tooth decay.
Because the licorice root needs a few minutes to have its effect on your teeth, Dr. Shi concluded that it would be best administered as a lollipop. Because such a high concentration of the licorice root is needed to be effective, the flavor doesn’t survive the condensing process so the lollipops are available in three delicious fruit flavors. Do we need to clarify that they’re sugar free?
These lollipops will be very effective at controlling decay among kids who are learning to brush and floss, the elderly who may have physical trouble brushing and flossing, as well as people in disadvantaged nations where maybe they don’t have toothbrushes and floss available. They’re also effective for those of us who just need a boost in our dental hygiene. The recommended cycle for these cavity-fighting treats is twice a day, for ten days, four times per year. You could even use them as a reward to your kids for good brushing and flossing technique!
If you enjoy cavity-fighting lollipops long-term you can expect your mouth to become generally cleaner and more resistant to decay. Don’t expect them to be able to replace any element of your good dental habits, just consider them the next step in fighting tooth and gum decay!
