Changes to Business in the Past Decade

There have always been problems when you own or operate a business that has some of the work being done in the field and the rest of the work being done in the office. Not only can it be difficult for the individuals that are working in the field to get together with those in the office regularly, it can also be difficult to get the data into the office in a timely manner. Of course, technology has really changed the way that many businesses are now operating and you might be surprised with some of the ways in which business has changed in the past decade. Here are a few changes that you may not have considered and some that are now so commonplace that you may have forgotten they weren't available not all that long ago.

Let's start with something that is rather commonplace and is used in almost every business as well as in our personal lives. I'm talking about cellular telephones, something that we use on a regular basis, and in some cases, almost on a continual basis. If you think back just a few years ago, however, this type of technology was not used in every business. As a matter of fact, some field crews resisted the use of cellular telephones because they would be more available and it was thought that they would not get as much work done if they were being bothered by those in the office. Now, it is a regular occurrence for the field to communicate with their office through this technology.

Another thing that has become increasingly popular in business is staying connected via the Internet. An individual that is working in the field can easily connect to the office computers over a network, provided they have an Internet connection. These Internet connections are available in many different locations as an open WiFi service. One problem that needs to be overcome when you are using this type of technology is that you must make sure that it is secure. Regardless of whether you are running a geotechnical engineering firm that is using high-tech environmental engineering software or if you are crew chief on the survey crew, you want to make sure that that data is not intercepted.

In some cases, the devices that we are now using in the field are also going to be connected to the office so that the data is uploaded in real time. This is a combination of many different types of technology, including Internet technology and cellular telephone technology. It allows you to connect with the office over a cellular Internet connection, similar to what you do with your smart phone. The data can be uploaded in real time, although you may be somewhat limited as to the amount of bandwidth that you have available. One thing is certain, when you use this type of technology to connect with the office and upload data, is going to save you quite a bit of time when compared to how much it would take for you to drive to the office and connect directly.
