The last decade saw a saga unwinding over phone hacking, toll frauds and eavesdropping scandals and arrests. The newspapers overflowing with hacking incidents was common affair. Some interesting facts might have been revealed about the celebs whose phone was hacked but if the same goes with you and some hacker breaks into your personal life, and the very next day you notice all your life printed in the newspaper headlines which millions of people read every day and laugh out your issues, it would make you restless as well. Although unauthorized interception into the CEBP (Communication enabled business processes) doesn’t call for hanging of the person but it is a punishable offence.

It is the responsibility of your Hosted PBX provider to make your voice and data related communication secure. The things that you must ensure with your Hosted PBX provider on security front are:

Installing the phone before firewalls

The primary step for voice security is to install a phone system on a machine/device behind the firewall. This configuration is easy and secure. Moreover, if you use PSTN lines with an ATA (Analog Telephony Adapter), you don’t need to configure your firewall at all.

Use strong extension passwords

Extension password should not be the ones which can be tracked down. Your extension pin must not be used as your password so that you can avoid remote hackers registering with their soft phone on your PBX. This can prevent security breaches.

Visual call reports
By keeping a check on your call logs time and again, you can quickly detect the misuse of your phone, if any. By looking at the inbuilt calling trends, you can study these facts and figures. Hence, it is your duty to check that whether the VOIP PBX phone system of your Hosted PBX service provider supports the generation of visual call reports or not.
IP PBX phone’s design
The design and code of your IP phone depends on the IP phone system that your Hosted PBX provider supports. The phone systems designed in .Net and java have inbuilt security features which are regularly tested and updated by security personnel.
Restrict the specific IP access
You should take the assistance of your service provider to restrict the use of IP phone you own to specific IP addresses registering on your network. And, if at any time you find that a particular IP address is unauthorized, you can restrict it from using your phone. Moreover, if you have remote workers integrated to your main office, you can consider using dedicated IPs for these locations. Your hosted service provider can configure it at your firewall level.
Henceforth, the level of security that your IP PBX system depends upon how much security measures your Hosted PBX provider has in store for you. Henceforth your first and foremost objective should be to choose a reliable Hosted PBX service provider.
