Choosing Guitar Lessons For Kids

Most kids at some stage show an interest in music – whether that be listening to their favourite recording artists and singing into the hairbrush at home, or going to attend gigs and local music events. Some kids take that interest further, and decide to learn to play a musical instrument. As parents, it's great to see our children develop constructive and educational interests like music, and it's important for the development of our child that we support and nourish that interest to turn it into a lifelong passion.

Trouble is, finding an appropriately qualified music tutor to help your child develop his or her interest is very rarely an easy task. There are hundreds, if not thousands of music tutors out there offering lessons to all takers – finding the right tutor for your child is like searching for a needle in a haysack of bedroom guitar tutors with little actual experience or training. And because absolutely anyone can brand themselves a guitar tutor, it's very much caveat emptor – let the buyer beware!

So what can you do to make sure you've found a guitar tutor that's worth his or her salts? Firstly, you want to check for accreditation. Don't take anybody's word for it – just because someone says they are a guitar tutor doesn't make it so. In fact, it could very well be their first ever lesson, and who knows – they may only be one step ahead of you in the learning process. Look for external verification – is the tutor a member of a professional body? Does he/she have extensive experience and qualification, either from the professional body or from a recognized university?

If the answer is 'no', you might want to move on and find another tutor.

Secondly, it's absolutely critical for safety reasons that you make sure any purported tutor has a full Enhanced Disclosure form, or criminal record check completed prior to giving you a lesson. These checks are routinely carried out by professional tuition organizations – those that operate on their own seldom go to these same lengths, which means there's no way of telling whether they are a convicted criminal, and most importantly, whether or not they are suitable for working with children. Don't leave it to chance and assume your chosen tutor is kosher – make sure he or she is fully checked before sending your child for his or her first lesson.

Music lessons can be a great experience for a child, and provided you find a good, reliable tutor that is appropriately qualified for the job he is purporting to do, your child can enjoy the lifelong benefits of a musical education.
