"Christian Reiki": good idea, or bad?
I am a Christian and a Reiki practitioner (a pracitioner of what I call "Christian Reiki"), and I know very fully that what I am doing is "of God", and is really helping people to heal. I know this through observation and through my intuition. I do however know that there are those who don't believe this, and don't understand how Christian Reiki could be valid, and I respect the place they're at as well.
I know various Bible verses are quoted so often to prove people's points one way or the other, and very often you can "prove" completely opposite points on any given issues, just by trying to find particular Bible verses that support your point of view (take "Christian Reiki", gay marriage, infant baptism, and abortion as examples).
From my perspective, the highest calling of the Christian is NOT strict Bible-orthodoxy (I know... radical statement right?). The Bible has been used as justification for killing, excluding, discriminating, and hating just as much as it's been used as guidance for loving and getting to know God better.
I do believe the Bible contains holy words and teachings--however, ultimately until we EMBODY these words in our daily practices, and are filled with loving, holy, joyful action in our hearts, relationships, actions, and lives--until that time, the Bible and the teachings of Jesus will remain empty lifeless words on a page, spoken to deaf ears millenia ago.
The highest expression of the Christian is to love as God loves, to serve as God serves, to quite literally "be God's hands, feet, and words to this world," and to "become an instrument of peace" as St. Francis lovingly put it in his famous prayer.
I know the term "Reiki" can be a stumbling block for many Christians, however. I choose to call the work I do "Christian Energy Healing" (as opposed to "Christian Reiki"). This isn't something new-agey or weird, but it's simply a technology for healing that is relatively new to the medical words of the West as a distinct healing technique, where for centuries now in the West we've relied solely on drugs and surgery to "heal" ourselves and others.
When people approach this Christian Reiki work with fear and doubt (especially those who call energy healing "demonic" or evil), I reiterate that it's a simple technology that really can be used in helping the healing process for anyone, Christians included, though not Christians alone.
If someone takes a medicine--a pill or an herb--and feels better, we don't condemningly call it "demonic" or "pagan" if it works for a non-Christian as well as a Christian, do we? If something works, it just works. This is the same with "Christian Reiki" or what I call "Christian Energy Healing."
I tell people who think Christian Reiki is some "new age weird" supernormal power: "Look, think back to the 1500's. If it were possible to have 2 people way back then talking to each other on cell phones from 100 miles away--I mean, this WOULD have been at least theoretically possible if people had known about it back then and had developed the appropriate technology--back in the 1500's there wouldn't have been a single religious person, Christian or otherwise, who wouldn't have called this "talking on cell phones" demonic, new-agey, "of Satan", and they would have used all kinds of Bible verses to back up their opinions, I'm sure.
However, today, we know that there's a simple technology underlying cell phones. It doesn't depend on one's religious affiliation, or believing in any particular Bible verse to work--it just works for everyone. In themselves, cell phones don't particularly bring a person towards God, nor do they keep someone away from God. They're simply tools. Likewise, "God's light shines on the righteous and unrighteous alike" (Matthew 5:45). It's up to us how we use cell phones, and it's up to us how we use the creative light of God. We are stewards of God's Good.
I think over the long term, some Christians will totally reject these methods of healing, and some will embrace them as part of their healing path. All is truly well. I trust that God has all beings in His hands, and that somehow He will continue drawing all beings toward His Light. And so the path of Christian Reiki and Christian Energy Healing will continue to unfold perfectly.
Blessings and Peace!
