Indigestion is when someone feels discomfort after a meal or during a meal in the stomach or chest. A kind of burning or pain is felt in the abdomen. The symptoms of indigestion are abdominal pain, bloating, fullness and tenderness on stomach. The people under the age of 55 years can be medicated without detail investigations but over 55 years of age one has to go gastrointestinal endoscopies.

The symptoms of indigestion include:

Pain in the stomach
Feeling of fullness
Belching and gas
Nausea and vomiting
Bad taste somewhat acidic

Overconsumptionof alcohol or carbonated beverages
Some medicines like aspirin or other antibiotics
Excessive eating at one time
Eating very fastily leads to indigestion
Improper chewing of food
Peptic ulcers
Eating very spicy, fatty and oily food
Inflammation of stomach

Reducing your risk of indigestion

You may be able to lower your risk of indigestion by:

Giving gap between meals so that one food get proper time for digestion
Don’t take alcohol with meals
Don’t take very spicy ,fatty and oily food
Don’t do exercise soon after the meal
Chew food properly

Complications of indigestion:

The main complication of indigestion is abdominal pain and the difficulty to do day to day things as you have the inability to eat properly. To reduce the complications of the indigestion you have to change your eating pattern and have to limit the choice among few easily digestible things only. If indigestion is accompanied by vomiting then consult a doctor immediately.

Diagnosis of indigestion

The indigestion is diagnonised on the basis of the symptoms first but for abnormal conditions some tests are also designed to identify the gastrointestinal function.

Routine blood test is done to know for any unexpected disease.

Stool test reveals any kind of infection or sensitivity to any medicine.

Endoscopies and x-rays are also done to know if any pancreatitis problem is not inside which is creating a problem for patient.

Treatment of Indigestion

Treatment of indigestion depends upon many factors like the age of the patient, medical history; extent of indigestion condition, adaptation to the medicines, patient’s opinion, medicines like antacids and antibiotics.

The easiest way to solve the problem of indigestion is to keep you away from the oily and fatty food. Have small portion of light food like bread or khichri which is easily digestible. Smokers and drinkers should not smoke and drink respectively. If the indigestion is caused to due stomach disorders then some antibiotics and antacids will treat indigestion.
