Conroe Windows and DoorsâEnergy Efficient Home Door
Written by Herman Smith
It is believed that a certain significant percentage of air can leak from your home door. Even a “tightly” sealed door can even have leaks unlike walls that can be tightly insulated. Though many would love to have a glass door, it is however considered to be inefficient home insulator.
Getting an energy star labeled door can help you increase and improve the efficiency of your home thus you may be able to save on electrical bills in the long run. However, if you are living in a mild climate area, getting an energy star door may not be enough. Instead, opting for a weather stripping door can help solve any leaks. This way, it is much more affordable and cost effective. For a newly constructed home, an energy star door can also be cost effective. But for an old or existing home that is within the regions of cold or hot climates, it is very important to consider the replacement of a glass door.
When shopping for a door for your home, always look for energy star label just as you would when looking for an energy efficient appliance unit. Each energy efficient door can also have varying rating as well as features hence you should also take a lot into the details. Basically, there are at least three major categories for an energy star door. And each of this category can have a unique rating when it come to efficiency requirement.
A door that is solid and without a glass in it is termed by the energy star as an opaque door. The opaque door that has the highest energy efficiency has a fiberglass or steel frame as well as a polyurethane core. In order for a door to deserve the energy star label, doors with no glass and window should have equal to or less than 0.21 U-factor. If you are unfamiliar what U-factor can mean, it is a type of rating that measures the heat transfer of a door per square foot. The U-factor is sometimes called the inverse of the R factor in insulating ratings. You can solve the R rating by if you have the U factor divide by 1. Hence, it is said that an energy efficient door has at least R rating of 5 which is five more times the real insulating value of a common or conventional solid wooden door.
