Considerations for Opening a Merchant Account
Written by Sarah Levy
When opening a merchant account for credit card processing, there are a number of important considerations to be made. If this is your first foray into accepting credit cards, you’ll need information about the various options available and which is right for your business.
The Merchant Account
A merchant account enables you to accept credit, debit and other payment cards from your customers, regardless of where you do business: in a store, online, on the road or via mail or phone order. If your business operates in more than one of these modes — or you have plans for it to do so — you may need more than one merchant account.
When all of your transactions transpire face-to-face, your merchant account requirements are very different from an e-tailer or mail order merchant who deals exclusively in card-not-present transactions, known as CNP. If you rely on a mobile workforce that delivers goods or services to customers in various locations, you require a credit card processing solution that supports mobility and flexibility. Already using a laptop computer to manage various aspects of your operation? You may be comfortable with expanding its scope to include credit card processing.
Whatever your processing needs, be sure the merchant account provider you select offers the right solutions and backs them up with the expertise, comprehensive customer support and security needed to ensure the right results for your business.
Rates and Feesr
Like any business — including yours — merchant account providers charge for their products and services in order to be profitable. Fortunately, the credit card processing industry is highly competitive, so you should be able to find a reputable provider who can deliver what you need for the price you want to pay.
Merchant account rates and fees can seem overwhelming at first, so ask your provider to explain exactly what charges you can expect on your statement each month and why each is required.
Fees will vary depending on the type of merchant account you choose and the type of credit card processing you do. Typical fees include interchange, discount rate, transaction, chargeback, ACH and batch processing, monthly minimum and annual fees.
Technologyr
Credit card processing technology is constantly advancing and evolving, so look for a merchant account provider who stays on top of the trends. In an industry that relies so heavily on hardware and software, you want to make sure your provider is delivering exactly what you need, when you need it.
Finally, understand that the overall success of your business depends on a number of factors, including being able to accept credit cards from your customers as efficiently and safely as possible. Scrimping on your merchant services to save money may be shortsighted and a decision you’ll later regret.
Find a merchant account provider who listens to your needs and your plans for your business, and then listen to their advice. Be open to suggestions and consider the big picture before making your final decision.
