Consultants Can Cause a Lot of Work Drama if You Are Not Clear What Your Motivation Is
Written by Craig Calvin
The problem with bringing in outside ideas and outside help when it comes to making changes is that people that have been around for a while become suspicious of the motives. This isn't necessarily a reflection on the person offering the ideas of change, but it is a natural way for people to feel. Whether real or imagined, there is a natural suspicion of people from the outside trying to make changes to something that they haven't been associated with.
But if there is a real effort put forth in making everybody comfortable with the situation and keeping everybody informed in what is going on, then there is a better chance for these suspicions to go away. That is why it is important for whoever that person is to keep the lines of communication open with everyone involved, but more than that, they should be open to ideas and suggestions from the people involved.
That does not mean that they have to use all of the ideas that are presented, but listening and looking at the merit involved with everybody's ideas is an important step. Obviously, there has to be a person that's ultimately in charge of making the final decisions and deciding what is going to be done in the end. But rather than dismissing all of the other ideas that come along, especially from the men and women that are involved and will be affected is a better way to go about it.
Of course, there are always times when a foot has to be put down and the final decision has to be made, but more frequently than not, just giving them a chance to voice their opinion and to know that it's at least being listened to and considered is enough to get them on the same page. And that is what you are going to need if you want a constant struggle on your hands. You need people to cooperate and to get moving in the same direction, and that direction should be improvement and constant improvement at that.
If you are fighting or arguing during the entire process, then you really aren't making the progress that you need to be making. So get on the same page and get other people on your side and that way they will feel like you are on the same team. And teammates are always going to fight for each other and help each other out.
