Craigslist Negotiation Tactics
Written by Cody Keppel
As we’ve discussed earlier in the art of negotiation, the more confident you are in negotiating, the more likely you are to make money on Craigslist; or if you’re already in business improve your profit margins. Creating and presenting convincing reasons for the seller to lower his or her price will help you acquire the best deals. But, many people mistakenly think skillful negotiation is an art, only known to a gifted few. This is not the case skillful delivery of a counteroffer is more method than magic. And today, we’re going to cover a few of these methods.
Negotiation starts at the same time as the conversation. You should be talk in a polite, relaxed, conversational tone. All the while, learn about whom you’re talking to and the item in question. The key to getting good deals is: build trust, and make an emotional connection. This will make them more open to your offer. Think of it this way, people always give their friends a good deal, you want to be their friend so you can get a good deal.
Once you’ve built rapport, and have worked your way to pricing, it is time to implement some techniques to lower their price.
Devalue the product.
If you noticed any damage the product has point out these issues, and the money you’ll have to spend to fix it, then make your counteroffer.
Fuel Costs.
The rising cost of fuel is a perfect reason to offer someone a lower price. A 30-50 mile round trip can easily cost $10-$20 if you own a truck. Even if you don’t live far away from the buyer, they don’t have to know that, make the pitch anyway.
Save them time.
You can combine this with the above fuel costs as well. Offer to come to their house and pick up the item. Many buying and selling decisions are made based on convenience. People love the idea of getting paid and not having to do anything, take advantage of this and make more money.
Meet their needs.
I talk about this a lot so if it gets old, too bad it is what makes and breaks successful negotiations. Your goal is to convince them to trust you, that ultimately you can solve their problems. I acquired a piece of furniture for $120 when the owner originally wanted nearly twice that amount. All because I was able to make a connection with them, understand and meet their needs. Negotiation is not voodoo, anyone can do it and with the above guidelines you will make money on Craigslist.
