The pain can be so severe that sufferers find it hard to swallow even liquids. Proper diagnosis and treatment are needed because if left untreated, this throat infection can result to a number of complications like rheumatic fever and kidney inflammation.

Anyone can be infected by bacterial infections like strep throat but it is most common to children and teens. The infection can be transmitted from one person to another through sneezing, coughing, sharing glasses or eating utensils and any form of exposure or physical contact with people who have the infection.

Getting medical attention is important when dealing with painful strep throat. Antibiotics are the common treatment and your doctor may also prescribe pain relievers to help ease the pain of the infection. While medical attention is really important when you are dealing with bacterial infections, there are also things that you can do to ease the pain and feel better.

Soothe painful strep throat with warm drinks like soups and teas. Warm drinks are soothing and can ease inflammation of the throat and loosen up mucus in the throat. You can even add honey to your tea as there are reports that honey has antibacterial properties good for throat infection. Lemon and honey are old home remedies to soothe inflamed throat.

To reduce the pain of strep throat, gargling warm water with salt can be very helpful. As you already know, salt has exceptional antibacterial properties and inhibits the growth of bacteria that is why salt is being used as preservative on foods like meat and fish that might get spoiled due to bacteria. The antibacterial properties of salt are also good in dealing with painful bacterial infections. Gargling warm water with salt fights bacteria, loosens up throat mucus and improves blood circulation on the inflamed area, thus gargling with warm water and salt solution several times a day can help relieve the pain. Of course you need to avoid swallowing the salt solution as your body do not need the additional sodium especially if you have high blood pressure.

Painful strep throat has a tendency to recur and can torment you over and over again. Many people suffer from recurring throat infections from time to time. It sometimes becomes a normal occurrence each year for some people.
