In comparison with other industries, the wellness and the fitness industry in South Africa is at its infancy. There is a lot more to learn and explore. I believe once we have fully explored all its possibilities, we will begin to see more and more opportunities being created in the industry in many years to come. Already, we have seen what Virgin Health Club and Discovery are doing for the industry locally. Discovery’s wellness program has been acclaimed in Europe and America as one the best in the world. Discovery is local company, so if they have achieved this on their own, it tells a lot about what the future holds for the industry.
The reason why I believe the future of the industry is bright is because of the simple desire every human possesses. In all my life, I have never met anyone who does not want to live a healthy lifestyle and look good as a result. I have never met anyone who wants to be riddled with sicknesses and diseases. We all desire wonderful things for ourselves and our loved ones and that include good health. As much as this is true, not many of us know what it means to live a healthy lifestyle. For some people, the fact that they don’t feel sick gives them no reason to think they are not healthy. For others, the topic of living a healthy lifestyle immediately turns them off because they are convinced they will not be able to afford the cost involved.
To some extent, this cost conce
is real. Most people will not be able to afford some of the services provided by Virgin Health Club or Discovery. Again, how many people will be able to afford the services provided by a Spa? I believe that is an issue that needs to be addressed by the industry. The question is how do we get more people interested in the services provided by the industry? Or maybe the question should rather be how do we empower more people to explore affordable avenues?
I have always maintained that wellness and fitness should not cost a fortune in order to be accessible. Of course, companies like Discovery serve their purpose in a country such as South Africa. They are generally targeted at the middle class citizens. Unfortunately, most people are found at the lower level of the economic ladder.
My solution is about being proactive. If you are really serious about your health, there are alte
ative ways of maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Your first point of call is doing a personal research on the internet and you will be amazed at what options are opened to you. There are professionals who dedicate their lives teaching this on the internet at no cost. They will teach you about nutrition, effective exercise and fitness routines that do not necessarily require the use of
treadmills and so on.
Do not let the issue of money prevent you from living a healthy lifestyle. Take matters into your own hands today and make it happen.
