Debunking Sunless Tanning Myths
Written by anita Valatia
Although sunless tanning has become quite popular among people looking for a convenient tanning option without exposing themselves to the sun, there are quite a few myths about sunless tanning floating around these days. And you can find them everywhere, from celebrity magazines and television to the internet. The objective of this article is to dispel all such myths surrounding sunless tanning so you can make an informed decision about whether you should opt for this method or not. Sunless Tanning: Myths Here are some of the most common myths about sunless tanning. ÃSunless tanning leaves you orange: So you have seen pictures of Lindsay Lohan and Snooki and other such tanning disasters. However, it is not the sunless tanning procedure itself that led to the disaster. It is usually the technician who is at fault in such cases. Maybe they used a shade too dark or applied extra coats which ruined the outcome. Sometimes even people insist on using darker colors for tanning without knowing that the outcome may not be as appealing as they think it is going to be. ÃSkin type does not affect sunless tanning: Skin type and its PH balance and oiliness definitely affects how well your skin takes up the tan. There are many factors which affect the PH balance in women (such as foods, medications, menstruation etc.). When the skin’s PH levels are out of balance or if the skin is oily, the sunless tan may not fully develop. ÃUsing any type of lotion will keep your sunless tan fresh: While moisture maintenance is essential to make the sunless tan last longer, using moisturizing lotions containing mineral oils, Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) or petroleum will almost definitely ruin the sunless tan. There are other moisturizing lotions available in the market which complement the sunless tan and increase their longevity, so you could get one of those. ÃIngredients used in sunless tanning are harmful: This statement is completely untrue. Even the Mayo Clinic cited that these sunless tans are a safer alternative as compared to sunbathing. Many of the ingredients used in sunless tanning are used in cosmetics, shampoos, lotions and hair sprays also. If you are too concerned about whether the ingredients are harmful or not, you can get the list of ingredients from your supplier and then decide which ones you want to stay away from. Now that you know the facts from the myths, you can make a more informed decision about sunless tanning.
