Most often web designers are get driven by their passion of designing a perfect site, sidelining the prime objective, which though yields into a beautiful site to die for but prove to be useless for target users. This is a very common mistake designers do at their level when they are handed over a project. They completely forget the objective of designing the website and start focusing on the appearance of the site. While building a site it is extremely important to define its objectives, only then you can determine your usability aspects of your site to match the needs of your intended users. Here are the three most common objectives of a general site and their solutions:

  • Quicker downloading: Ideally, 95% of your web pages must be downloaded (theoretically) in just two seconds under a 56kbps modem. Your aim should be to get present in front of your users instantly when they want you to or as long as they can wait. Research says, internet users are very impatient and move to other link immediately.
    • Solution: If your site takes long time to download it’s time to minimize the number of words and graphic files on each page.
  • Easy to understand: If you are appealing to international audience, remember there are some fractions of readers whose first language is not English. Realizing the fact, make your site as easier as possible, which can be understood even by a seventh grader.
    • Solution: Create all of the content in a very Basic English and get them checked for readability before it is finally uploaded.
  • Handy searches: An ideal site always allows its users to find any the specific content or information they are looking for within three clicks or even lesser than that. After all they are all here with some purposes and must be fulfilled if you are the right platform.
    • Solution: Provide a search form at the top of every page virtually for easy and quick access. Always make it available at a top of the page as it will make it easily visible to the users.

Apart from these objectives there can be many others which may differ as per the class of audience being targeted. Try to sum up similar objectives for your site. Most important of all in web design is that the most popular features of your website must be placed prominently on the home page. This will save user’s time hunting for them.
