Desert National Park: An Encounter with Wildlife

Located in Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan, Desert National Park is one of the largest parks of India. Sprawled over an area of about 3150 sq km, the park boasts of its rich flora and fauna. The park is the finest example of the ecosystem of Thar Desert. The harsh terrain forces both, the flora and fauna to survive on the edge. Sand dunes form around 20 percent of the sanctuary. Three lakes-Padam Talao, Milak Talao and Rajbagh are the prime water deposits for the inhabitants of the park. The place invites a large number of migratory birds for its proximity to Bharatpur.

Being the only national park amidst a desert in India, it offers you the opportunity to witness wildlife throbbing out of the Thar desert. The prime reason behind the establishment of the park was to protect the flora and fauna of the desert.

Wildlife of the Parkr
This sanctuary boasts of its rich wildlife that is rare and raw. You can see here desert monitors, spiny-tail lizard, chameleons, sand fish and snakes. Other important inhabitants that you can find here include chinkaras, the desert fox, the black buck and the Bengal fox. The park is also home to the blue-tailed green bee-eaters, the grey partridge and the Indian bustard.

The area of the park is an asylum for migratory as well as resident birds of the desert. Some commonly seen birds are sand grouse, larks and shrikes. You can also see the Houbara and the Demoiselle crane in the winters.

Jeep safari is an interesting way to explore the wildlife of the park. It enables tourists to see a wider area in a short span of time. The safari offers you the opportunity to see a rich variety of wildlife from the jeep in an easy, safe and an adventurous way.

Camping is another wonderful way to experience the wildlife of the park. Tourists must be aware of the dos and don’ts of the park and should abide by.

Being in the Jaisalmer city of Rajasthan, the park also offers opportunity to explore nearby attractions. Some popular ones include the Jain temples, the Golden Fort and the Havelis of Jaisalmer.

The famous Havelis of the city are Salim Singh ki Haveli, Nathmal ki Haveli and Patwon ki Haveli. On visiting these Havelis, you can witness the finest of architecture and carvings pertaining to the royal era. These Havelis with their age-old charm and amazing magnificence, attract swarms of tourists till the present day.
