"DESIRE", The Engine That Fuels Success

In a previous article I defined'SUCCESS' asnbasically meaning to reach a certain achievement or goal; possibly monetary but also involving other elements as well, such as In my last posting I began to write about what it means to be ‘Successful’. I had defined ‘Success’ to a position or a lifestyle that a person desires.

To me it became apparent and very important to believe success to be an individual thing. In other words’ success for myself may not be someone else’s idea of success and that is completely ok!

I love the old commercial that the US Army advertised a few years ago which said “Join the Army & Be ALL You Can Be”! To me that is what success is all about, that is we as individuals must each become a full & and true expression of the Authentic self that the Creator God intended us to be. When we become who we were truly meant to be then we will have or be on the way to a true life of ‘SUCCESS’.
In thinking about the elements that make up success I think we would be remiss if we did not discuss the trait of ‘DESIRE’. As I have titled today’s posting I believe that ‘Desire is the Engine that Fuels Success’. Simply stated if you can begin to locate what you are truly Desirous & Passionate about you will have a much easier time defining what Success means for you.

I could not help but think of a former neighbor of mine named Frank. Frank lived next door to us for 12 years and had begun work in a Foundry right out of High School. He had been at that Foundry for 20 years. His job was a hard and dirty job as daily he mixed & setup concrete to make bricks . In speaking with Frank it became apparent that after all those years it was becoming a drudgery to go to work every day. More and more he wondered if this was all his life was meant to be,,,to work in a place of such hard labor in a job where he was basically tolerated and not celebrated. But then one spring something wonderful began to happen for Frank that changed his Life forever! As long as I had know
Frank he had been an adept master of growing wonderful Roses. I knew this well because when we moved in my wife wanted to grow roses and when we tried we always failed with our roses either dying or just looking plain sickly.Frank came over a number of times and patiently showed us what was needed to cultivate , grow, and sustain a fine rose garden (not an easy task in the damp Pacific NW)! Well word spread around the neighborhood and soon most everyone on the block was coming to Frank for advice on how to grow roses . It wasn’t long after that at the coaxing of family & friends that Frank was traveling on Saturdays to the Local Farmers’ Markets around the area selling His roses. He said Roses were His Passion & offered him a respite from His daily ‘Grind’ of a job. From that spring on things ‘snowballed’ for Frank!,,, He had folks showing up on his doorstep daily to buy His wonderful Roses . By the next seaso
Frank had built 2 Greenhouses on his property and developed two Hybrid roses that were excellent growers in our damp Pacific NW climate. He began to do a small part-time business out of his home. Pretty soon things became so busy he had to hire his two teenage daughters to mind the store while he went to his daily job. When for 4 consecutive months Frank’s ‘Home Based Business’ made more Money tha
His daily job he knew he had arrived!! He gave notice at the Foundry & came home to run the Rose Business He loved. Since that time 5-6 years ago Frank has become one of the prominent Rose Experts in the Nation selling his roses world wide, expanding to 3 locations with 50+ employees, and traveling around the country to speak on “Roses”—His Passion! In finding His true Love & Passion Frank found true Success & hence Fulfillment for his life. Frank had ‘Located’ His true gifting and calling and moved forward never looking back!

It is sad to me today, as I sit here in my office reflecting on ‘SUCCESS’ how many of us have just settled for a life of Mediocrity instead of ‘Taking the bull by the horns’ as it were & as the Army has so aptly said “Be ALL You Can Be!”

Ephesians 1:17-19 is a favorite portion of scripture that really sums things up for me when we discuss DESIRE. Paul is praying here for the church of Ephesus that they as a people , each individually would receive a “SPIRIT of WISDOM & REVELATION” in the Knowledge of Him(God), that they would know in being a wonderful creation of God’s that he has invested richly in them (in other words God don’t make no junk!) and because of God’s rich investment in each of them that they Have a CALLING & a DESTINY to fulfill!,,,,He (Paul is praying) that they will discover that Call & Destiny!

In conclusion today I would declare that each of us need a Passion—A Desire to turn our vision of Success into reality. Without DESIRE we can not even begin the journey to success. How about you my friend? Can you locate and find what you are Passionate about for that will be a clue to your success.
