All of us should know that soda or any diet drink is one of the worst things you can consume. The chemicals, gut-fattening high fructose corn syrup in such carbonated drinks will bring a whole lot of health problems.

Many people falsely believe that diet soda is a good thing for losing body fat. However, there is nothing remotely healthy about drinking diet soda. In fact, there are studies which show that dedicated diet soda drinkers become fatter than regular soda drinkers.

An 8-year University of Texas study was conducted on this topic, and the surprising thing about the results is not that the soft drink was linked to obesity, but that people only drinking diet soft drinks had the higher risk of obesity.

There are many factors to explain this phenomenon.

A reason is that the artificial sweeteners in diet sodas create a negative hormonal response in the body, increasing fat storing hormone production and cravings for refined carbohydrates after consuming the diet drink.

With artificial sweeteners present in diet drinks, your taste buds sense that you ingested something very sweet, and even though you might not have ingested sugar, your body follows with an insulin response. If you do not already know, higher insulin levels can increase cravings as well as triggering your body to deposit body fat.

Another reason for weight gain from drinking diet drinks is that people may subconsciously think that because they are drinking a diet soda, they now have more leeway to eat more of everything else, thus consuming more calories overall.

The full cause for weight gain from diet drinks is most probably some combination of both of the reasons stated. If you are serious about your health and body, soda of any kind should always be avoided.

So, what are some good and healthy alternatives to diet sodas?

Some the best alternatives you can have are ice cold water with lemon or just unsweetened iced teas. You have plenty of options with teas - green, white, black and many others! Use your creativity in making your iced teas and you will enjoy it more. In addition, you will get a more diverse array of antioxidants.

My personal favorite drinks will be ice cold water, for zero calories and better hydration, and low fat, high protein milk for minimal fats intake and maximal protein intake for building or maintaining of muscle mass.
