Does permanent bliss lie beyond our senses? How do we attain that spiritually?
Written by DadaBhagwan
Yes, permanent bliss lies beyond our senses, and we can attain it spiritually!
Let us understand how…
Whenever we see, smell, taste, hear or touch something through our senses, we either like it or dislike it or feel neutral about it. When we like something, we experience pleasure while enjoying it. Hence, we desire to have more and more of it, and when we have it, we develop such attachment towards it that we never want to lose it, and in course of time, the attachment gets so strong and severe that we begin to possess it, we hate sharing it with anyone. This attachment and hatred gives rise to passions of anger, pride, deceit and greed, which eventually result in enormous pain and suffering. It makes our life miserable.
Moreover, the happiness we experience from the five senses is not permanent. For example, we eat a sweet dish and we relish its taste. How long will that taste last? And since we like its taste, we tend to eat more and more of it so that we enjoy it more and more. But overeating leads to ailments in the body. The law of Nature is such that we have to repay whatever happiness we derive from worldly things, be it a sweet dish or anything else. The pleasure derived from any of the senses is temporary in nature and also, we have to repay for the pleasure we enjoyed by suffering an equivalent amount of misery in life.
And what is permanent bliss?
The ultimate freedom from all misery means eternal bliss.
The state of inner bliss that prevails amidst mental, physical and external afflictions is the bliss of the Soul. Once the bliss of the Soul (the real Self) is attained, it never leaves. The bliss of the Soul is eternal.
How do we attain this bliss?
Bliss is the inherent nature of our true Self (the Soul). Yet, we are running after the temporary senses of pleasure. Why? It is due to the ignorance of the Self, the real Self.
Some may have the information that, ‘I am not the body but the Soul.’ But as long as we do not experience it, ignorance prevails. Due to the ignorance of the Self, we continue to believe that, ‘I am indeed John (please insert your name here)', and I am experiencing happiness in the sensual pleasures.’
This wrong belief has resulted in the development of anger, pride, deceit and greed (the passions or kashayas). We experience happiness because of the Self's ignorance, which is indeed the cause of worldly life. We run after worldly pleasures to get some solace from the burning suffering due to our kashayas. And in the process, we increase the kashays all the more. The more the kashayas, the lesser the experience of our blissful state.
Due to the intoxication of the ego of 'I am John', one has completely lost awareness of the Self. Everything in worldly life is nothing but intoxication. The food is intoxicating, and the senses are also intoxicating. When most people in the world are intoxicated and running after sensual pleasures, how can we head towards permanent bliss?
A Gnani Purush, the Enlightened One, dwells in permanent bliss.
He is free from ego and worldly attachments. He has the spiritual powers to destroy our ignorance of the Self and make us experience the real Self (Soul) by gracing us with Self-realization. When the wrong understanding of, 'I am John' leaves and the right understanding of, 'I am Pure Soul' comes about, that is bliss. After Self-realization, the state of inner bliss prevails naturally, there is the bliss of the Soul. Consequently, the kashays begin to be inactive, which leads to further experience of the state of inner bliss.
"If you experience samadhi (enlightened bliss) in a completely difficult situation, know that you have met a Gnani Purush (enlightened one)! " -Param Pujya Dada Bhagwanr
So come on, let us meet the living Gnani and attai
Self-realization so that we too can experience the permanent bliss lying beyond the senses. We will undoubtedly experience a truly peaceful state even amidst a total lack of peace on the outside. The bliss of the Self amidst external turmoil is the 'tested' permanent bliss! Let’s attain it NOW!!
