DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ON THE RISE- HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOURSELF

Just this summer, Governor Schwarzenegger cut funding for all Domestic Violence Programs in the state of California as part of his $489 million in budget cuts. You certainly don’t need to be a psychic to predict an increase in violence against women who now have no safety net!

The complete loss of state funding will force many of the shelters and safe havens empowering victims to begin a new life in safety, to close their doors, abandoning the very people who need their support through a desperate and dangerous time.“This could cost lives,” Says Maggie John, the Executive director of Shasta Women’s Refuge. “It was a very naive thing to do to cut a program like this. It’s a safety net for victims of domestic violence and their children.”(Elizabeth Gadley of khsltv news).

Just three weeks ago, in my home town, Danielle Keller, 29, was murdered by her baby's father as she was running away with baby Samantha in her arms. Jim Mitchell violated the restraining order in place, and brutally bludgeoned her to death with a baseball bat, kidnapping the baby on her first birthday. The courts had passed on placing Mitchell in jail just several weeks prior to the murder; had he been imprisoned this tragedy would never have occurred.

Statistic show that every week, two women are brutally murdered by their partners.

WHERE WILL THESE WOMEN GO FOR SAFETY WHEN THEY LEAVE? WHO WILL SHELTER AND ADVISE THEM?

According to the Stanford Educational Group, Domestic Violence is the leading cause of injury to woman between the ages of 15 and 44. Almost 1/3 of all women in the hospital emergency rooms are there as a result of being physically abused and assaulted by their partner.

With the cut in government services, community, family and friends need to step up and offer support.

DO YOU HAVE A FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBER IN AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP?

Perhaps your intuition has shown you that one of your friends is in a difficult situation. If this is true, trust your gut, offer help, give a hand, offer a safety net, and support. Now more than ever, help them get a plan together, an exit strategy. Reassure them you will be there for them.

USE YOUR INTUITION TO PROTECT YOURSELF

Alarming. So here’s a few thoughts to take with you. With the increasing economic collapse around us, domestic violence is on the rise, as is all types of violence. More than ever, its important to hold your own personal energy shield as a protection, and to trust your intuition. Reach out to friends and family for help. Use your sixth sense to avoid trouble. If it feels dangerous, don’t go there. If your partner is violent, plan your exit strategy carefully, use caution and intuition. Call the hotline and pray the budget cuts haven't closed their doors. And don't leave traces of your research and strategies.

I offer consulting sessions to women who are in these challenging situations, to help look at not only the way to leave, but what challenges and obstacles these lessons have taught them as they move forward. In the spiritual realm, there are always reasons why you chose this situation. Gaining clarity from an outside perspective, revealing how this fits into your life, your purpose, and your mission, will help tremendously in the leaving and recovery process.
