Doxycycline can be effectively used for treating infections caused by certain bacteria. The drug may be used in combination with other medicines to treat certain amoeba infections. It may also be used to prevent or slow the progression of anthrax after exposure. The drug is a tetracycline antibiotic that works by slowing the growth of bacteria. Slowing bacteria's growth allows the body's immune system to destroy the bacteria.

The drug carries a number of side effects – Doxycycline may cause photosensitivity skin reactions for those intending long-term use for malaria prophylaxis because it can cause permanent sensitive and thin skin.
