India claims and has the right to glory in an ancient and long enduring culture, an age of centuries in which art, science, literature and philosophy flourished and the influence of Indian thought spread far beyond the bounds of the Indian world. In any country, education is an attempt by the society to transmit its ways of life to the succeeding generation so that they can be prepared for life. Education in ancient India was in the hands of the Brahmins and the children of the three higher castes, Brahmin, Kshatriya and Vaisya, who used to receive education at the guru’s residence. In the Gurukulas, children used to study the Vedas and Upanishads. The introduction of the Buddhist system of education gave a new dimension to the education system of the country. Buddhist education centered on monasteries, where these monasteries served as centers of learning and their doors were open for all, irrespective of caste, community or country.

The education system aimed at the building up of the character and ensured social service.The heritage of India is a multi-colored fabric into which a number of colored strands have been woven. The Muslim invasion and rule in India brought along in its wake, changes in the system of Vedic education, which underwent transformation in the Buddhist period. The Muslim education flourished in Maktabas (primary school) and Madrasas (high school). These schools were attached to the mosques and the primary objective of education was to teach to read the holy Koran. Evolution of the modern system of education proceeds in a zigzag fashion. The indigenous education came to naught when the British rule fashioned the system of education modeled after their own system.

During the British period, stress was laid on empowering women by providing them education. Scholars like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, and Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar contributed immensely in upgrading the position of women in the country. Since independence, India witnessed rapid progress in the educational scenario. There was unprecedented quantitative expansion. The government also laid importance on raising the standard of education by implementing different programs and projects. Globalization has also made its impact on the present day education system of India. The country is coming up with world class universities, colleges and schools that have set their own standards in the world spectrum. Apart from imparting formal education in the schools, emphasis is also given on developing a child oriented learning process that focuses on the all round development of children.
