There are many reasons that employers will want to run a background check on someone before offering them a position within their company. As far as a background check goes, potential employers have a variety services that they have gained use of for a fee. While this can be a scary process, even for those with nothing to hide, it is something that is necessary for many job positions. Even those with nothing bad on their reports will still fear a check, as they may not know if something was reported falsely on their report, which leads to not getting the job. Most people have never actually seen what comes up on such a report and just have to wonder what it says.

Some of the most common searches that are being used for checks are that of criminal records, education verification, driving records, credential verification, sex offender registry, reference checks, Patriot Act search, and credit reports. Depending on the type of work that the potential employee is looking at, will often be the determining factor in which background check should be used. Some employers even go to the extent of using several different types of checks while others will just pick one type and only look for extremely bad reports.

If a credit report is used, the laws provided by the Fair Credit Reporting Act makes sure that the law is followed. There has to be proper notification to the consumer, and the report must be properly destroyed or kept safe so that the person's personal financial history is not leaked or misused in any way. This is also one of the reports used that many people feel is unjust. The thoughts are that bad credit should not keep someone from getting a job in order to make money to pay off their debts. But places such as banks may consider your bad credit as a risk to the company. The thought may be that you can't be trusted with money.

Who Needs Them

Anyone who is looking for a way to cut the chances of hiring someone who is going to steal or cheat them out of something is opting for the use of a background check. Many places such as banks, transportation companies, childcare and healthcare industries, teaching jobs, police and law enforcement, and many military positions are taking advantage of the convenience and possible warning that can be gained. It is not only your typical employers that should be using these types of services but also anyone who is hiring a babysitter, a nanny, a housekeeper, or anyone who will have access to your home and family should be put through such a check

While some businesses will allow a few certain minor blemishes on a background check slide, some are so strict that the slightest error made in your life will prevent you from employment within their company. These employers often feel that by using the background check, they are minimizing a possible negligent hiring liability. The small cost of using the different services to receive those checks is well worth it as they may be avoiding someone who steals or is prone to violence and such. These small fees will more then pay for itself over and over again. So while it may seem like a scary inconvenience for the employees trying to get a job, they might want to keep in mind that a search on potential employees may well benefit not only the company itself but also the current employees. Hiring a violent person puts everyone at risk in one degree or another.
