Ending a Relationship - The Difficulties in Making a Complete Break from Your Ex
Written by Chris J Roberts
Recovering from a breakup can be a difficult thing to do. If you were in a long-term relationship and or you lived with your ex, it may be especially hard to try to put the pieces of your life back together.
If you two have been together long enough that you need to take time to sort through all of your property and decide what belongs to whom, then you don't even have the luxury of never having to see your ex again. The arguments that develop over things like furniture and kitchen appliances can escalate into a full-fledged war. You may feel as if you cannot make it through the process without losing your mind. However, there are a few things that may help ease the process a bit.
Discuss Things Outside of the Place You Lived
If you and your ex shared a residence, chances are that everywhere you look is filled with memories. This will only make it harder for you two to calmly decide who is getting what. Find a neutral place to discuss things like the home of a mutual friend. It is best to make a list of things you know to be yours before you start.
Find a Go Between
If ending a relationship was particularly ugly, it may be very difficult for the two of you to come to any kind of decisions. There may simply be too much anger. To solve this, you may want to find someone that is not too close to either one of you to help you divide things in a sensible manner; one that is based on facts not emotions.
Don't Go It Alone
If it is possible, try to have any and all conversations when there are other people around. This will make both of you behave better and may help to speed the process along. It may also keep you from being distracted from the task at hand.
