Engineering Easy to Use Portable Gas Detectors
Written by Adam smith
Whatever the threats and hazards you face in your workplace or environment, it is important that you have the equipment on hand to monitor and respond to any emergencies. Portable gas detectors are essential for managing hazards in the atmosphere, particularly flammable gases, poisonous chemicals and depleted oxygen. While ease of use may not seem as important a design feature as reliability, accuracy or durability, it is actually necessary to ensuring that the instrument provides the most accurate and practical results.
Ease of use is made up of various different components, all of which combine to produce a device that can easily be picked up in an emergency and used to proved essential care and protection. One of these components is the working life of the portable gas detector. Any kind of emergency device would be completely useless if it was incapable of providing multiple hours or even multiple days worth of charge free and continuous usage in the field.
Extended operational times also reduce the opportunity for human error, as there is no need for repeated refills, calibrations or reprogramming. Minimising human error is an important design feature in all successful portable gas detectors, as these models are guaranteed to be more reliable and accurate in all situations. The most reliable devices also do as many tasks as possible automatically, without prompting from the operator. These tasks can include continuous and simultaneous readings of multiple hazards and giving out warning signals when atmospherically substances reach a dangerously high level.
When portable gas detectors are given to workers for personal protection purposes in confined spaces and hazardous environments, it is essential that the devices are as easy to use and interpret as possible. In most cases the wearers of the instruments will be largely untrained in the finer points of atmospheric safety and will be paying more attention to their work than the monitoring devices, so the interface and display on the portable gas detector needs to guide the worker through safe and straightforward usage processes.
One major area where things can go wrong with atmospherically measuring instruments is calibration. If the device is not calibrated correctly, or is calibrated for the wrong substances and hazards, the results can be disastrous. Calibration processes therefore need to be as simple and straightforward as possible. Calibration kits are available for many different atmospheric devices, and some devices are even engineered to be completely calibration free for the greatest ease of use.
