Erectile Dysfunction Drugs and Heart Disease
Written by Natalie Bonanski
If you suffer from erectile dysfunction (E.D.) in addition to heart disease, you need to be aware of important medical information about possible drug interactions. Typically, men who take any kind of nitrates for chest pain should be careful if they are also taking Cialis or a similar drug on a regular basis. If you do take ED drugs, nitrates should be avoided within approximately 48 hours of using the E.D. drug. Because there have been a few anecdotal reports of death from the combination, play it safe and be 100 percent aware of what you are taking , when you took the last dose, and what you overall medication routines are.
The primary thing to remember is to talk to your doctor about any and all medication that you take. The doctor will be able to tell you exactly how much is safe for you, and will be able to give you a more accurate warning about specific interactions that apply to you. Regardless of what you read in a newspaper, on the internet, or in a book, realize that your own personal physician has the final word on what is safe for you, especially if you are taking nitrates and also suffer from erectile dysfunction.
Cialis is a very effective drug for treating E.D., and has grown in popularity since its introduction several years ago. It works, like most drugs in its class, by increasing blood flow and opening up clogged blood vessels. After that, it is easier for men to achieve erections due to the effect of the drug.
Nitrates are in a class of medication that helps with chest pains. They work in a very similar way to the E.D. drugs, causing blood to flow more easily. Because the two drugs, Cialis and nitrates work in the same way, the risk of interaction is only logical. Unfortunately, it appears that a synergistic reaction takes place, causing too much vessel dilation, and thus dangerously low blood pressure when the drugs are combined.
While the result can be as bad as a stroke, or as simple as a bit of light-headedness, make note of the fact that the two types of drugs are often contraindicated, meaning that they often cause major problems when taken simultaneously. Cialis is very good at what it does. It helps millions of men who suffer from E.D. However, like any medication, users must be informed about the interactions, side effects, and proper dosages. Be sure you talk to your doctor about the medications you are on and any new ones you need or wish to start taking. Only your physician will be able to guide you in the best direction!
