The US wastes more energy than any other nation. And with all the issues our planet is having these days with pollution and the depletion of our ozone layer, we should help save electricity, which in turn will help our environment.

Today, we will address just a couple of things you can do to help conserve energy and also save a little bit of money every day. There is nothing hard about what we will share with you but you must try to do these things to save our planet.

Just switching off the lights when you leave a room in your place is one of the simplest things you can do to not waste electricity. Many of us probably temporarily leave the living room lights turned on when we go to the kitchen to get a snack because we think we are going to return right away. If you do this even for only twice a day, that is more or less 30 minutes of consumed power for only this one light. Even though 30 minutes doesn't look like much, keep in mind that millions upon millions of people do this everyday. And every person who does this is consuming 182 hours of electricity annually for simply this one light. Let's assume that we really leave the lights switched on for approximately 182 hours every year and let's multiply that by one million people. That's 182 million hours of energy consumed yearly coming from a light that is left on in a single room.

Another wasteful habit that many people do is switch the lights on when going inside a room. It's one thing many people do out of habit. I often catch myself doing this also. The trouble is that often, there is enough light coming into a room. However a lot of us still walk in a room and switch the lights on. And on top of that, because of the natural light getting in, we tend to forget we turned the room light on in the first place and leave it on for the rest of the day. You just need to make the extra effort to not flip the lights on if there is sufficient natural light coming in.

One more issue is people leaving electric devices like televisions and radios on the entire day, even when they are not using them. A good example is my mother; she's forever leaving the Telly switched on in the living room, even though she's may be in the kitchen preparing a meal or cleaning the rest of the house. That's a great deal of energy being squandered. Thus, if you are not watching the telly, just switch it off.

These are just some very simple suggestions that can go a long way to conserve electricity and help save the environment. It merely takes a little effort on your part to remember these things, and when each person makes a little effort, it can add up to make a great difference.
