Executive Coaching

A coach need not necessarily be the best player himself. We know a lot of coaches in various sports where the coach was a mediocre player in his prime but had to coach star players. I also know a lot of star players who turned coaches and were big time failures. Thus, coaching is not necessarily about playing yourself. Similarly, executive coaching is not about being the best manager or leader yourself. So what then is coaching or Executive Coaching?

In sports, a coach brings the best out in a player by helping him identify the wrong techniques that the player could be employing or by motivating him, stretching him to realise his potential. Similarly, an executive coach helps the manager give his best by facilitating certain processes with the manager. An executive coach is essentially not only a coach but also a trainer, mentor, friend, parent and counsellor, all rolled into one.

The point is that an executive coach has to facilitate, not do things by himself. For example, in sports, if a player is not playing well, the coach doesn’t come forward and starts playing for the player. Similarly, whether a manager is able to do his job or not, the executive coach helps the person in identifying the conce
s, setting the objectives and work towards achieving those objectives. The coach provides the framework, the direction and the structure but works from the outside. The Manager works on them and fulfils the objectives himself.

In NA Human Resource Solution Pvt Ltd (NAHRS), in an executive coaching assignment, we work with the manager or the coachee for a period of three months by identifying three goals and achieving the same. The assignment is always result oriented and one out of three goals could be set by the coachee’s boss in consultation with the coachee. Remaining two goals could be from the areas identified by the coachee himself. Mr Neeraj Agarwal, Director, NAHRS has worked as a coach to a number of top management professionals from diverse industries.
