Use of biometrics has been prevalent since a very long time. Facial detection, however, is comparatively new in this area. Though fingerprint readers rule the biometric market, face recognition system is not far behind! Facial detection systems may make use of various algorithms to detect faces accurately and fast.

Facial details can be stored as either two dimensional or three dimensional templates. It is not merely used for security purposes! Human Resource management is also provided by biometric face recognition system. It is used in both - high profile places and in normal, day to day life.

There are many areas where this technology can be applied. Some of its areas of application can be given as below:

*It is used widely in high profile Government offices, defense offices, etc. These offices contain sensitive data. Access cannot be granted to any individual without verification. Biometric face recognition system helps in authenticating faces that are granted permit to access the premises.

*Offices with many employees make use of face recognition system. It becomes difficult to manage the details of a large number of employees. Having the support of a mechanized system is advisable in large offices.

*Airports, railway stations, and other places make use of this system. Places that are prone to terrorist or mafia attacks use this system excessively. Face recognition system helps in reducing crime and major assaults in the area.

*Police officers may make use of biometric face recognition system. Identification and verification of criminals can be easily done. Face scans are required, especially at international borders, to check the people entering a country. This will prevent illegitimate entrée to any country, thus, enhancing its security.

*Schools, colleges, and other institutes of education make use of a face recognition system. Attendance can be marked, entry can be restricted for certain individuals, and visitors can be managed. It may prove useful to manage many students.

*Hospitals may need this system. Doctors, nurses, and other staff in the hospital are responsible for the life or death of a patient. Their work is simplified by the use of this mechanism. Even the past records of unconscious patients can be traced easily, if this system is used.

*Some countries have also started using face recognition system during elections. Similarly, this is the most reliable method in identification of an individual. It can be used while preparing driving licenses, passports, and even in ATM (Auto Teller Machine) centers.

Apart from these areas, this application can be used in various other areas. Face recognition system is gaining immense popularity in modern times. It is no longer restricted to highly secured places. It is also gaining wide acceptance in day to day life. It is non-invasive. In this machine, the user is first enrolled into the database. Next time, the same user appears before the device, his facial details are matched with the details stored in the database. If the details match, the user is verified. The system is developing day by day. Nowadays, facial details can be stored in both – 2D or 3D. It is giving more accurate and quicker results. Its application is expected to increase in the near future!
