The prostate gland makes up an important component of the human male reproductive system. Let's take a deeper look at this gland and its functions through this article.

Structurally, the prostate gland is a walnut-sized fibro-muscular gland situated just in front of the rectum, between the bladder and the penis. At birth, this gland is as small as a pea, whereas in adult males, it can grow up to 1.5 inches. The urethra runs right through the center of the prostate, draining urine from the bladder. The prostate gland is the only exocrine gland that's found in the midline of the human body, and can be felt during a rectal exam.

Facts about Prostate Gland

· The prostate gland is composed of several tiny glands, which are encased in a fibrous tissue referred to as the prostatic capsule, which is covered by a layer of fat.

· The prostate gland secretes fluid that nourishes the sperm. Before ejaculation, this fluid is added to the semen. This fluid also contains Prostate Specific Antigen or PSA, which helps to liquefy the semen after ejaculation has occurred. It makes the seminal fluid alkaline, which protects the sperm from the acidic environment of the vagina. This mechanism aids sperm survival, longevity, and motility.

· The prostate gland contains muscles which help in expelling the semen out of the penis during intercourse.

· The prostate gland is also responsible for sealing off the entry from the bladder into the urethra with the help of a muscle known as the sphincter, thus preventing the flow of urine during intercourse.

· The prostate gland is dependent on testosterone for it to function. The gland grows in size at the onset of puberty in adolescent males. Testosterone aids the gland in regulating bladder control.

One of the most important glands in the human body, the prostate gland is susceptible to many infections as men near their 50s. Most of these occur due to an enlarged prostate and can interfere with sexual activity and urinary functions. Super Beta Prostate is a dietary supplement that can be used to maintain prostate health.
